Corporate Investment Banking

Corporate investment banking is done by some of the biggest financial institutions in the world such as Merrill Lynch, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs and many others. Until the late 80s, investment banks and commercial banks were kept separately in North America. Today, they are often combined. For example Merrill Lynch has commercial banking services and investment banking services, as most major institutions do. Investment banking is different from commercial banking in a variety of ways.

Investment banking is used to raise funds for capital and offer advice regarding transactions like mergers and acquisitions. There are many other things today's banks offer including various underwriting tasks, brokerage services, financial research, currency exchange and more. These banks have one main objective in mind which is raising money for the corporation, helping that money to grow and protecting it against loss. Therefore it takes a dedicated network of investment banking professionals rather than just one person. An investment bank is like a sophisticated piece of machinery with many complex parts.

When it comes to the career field of investment banking, there are many opportunities available. For this reason many business students choose to enter this field in some way. To be successful as an investment banker it is imperative to get the proper education. You will also need to intern at a firm where you are interested in working. The reason for an internship is to learn real job skills and hopefully get a job offer. Companies want to see potential employees in action before they make an offer. Often internships in the world of investment banking are competitive and hard to get.

Corporate investment banking is a huge industry in today's financially driven world. Now that investment and commercial banking can be done at one institution you will find even more job opportunities at one institution. While you don't have to live in a big city to be an investment banker, that is where all the best jobs are. New York City is considered by many to be the unofficial investment banking capital of the U.S. If you don't live in NYC and don't want to move there you can still find opportunities for jobs and internships at banks in your area. They won't pay as much but no matter where you are a career as an investment banker is likely to be lucrative.
