Investment Banking Recruiter

Anyone seeking a job as an investment banker will need to first impress an investment banking recruiter. Most likely, more than one. These recruiters are paid to select interns, analysts and bankers. It is their job to weed out the herd and choose only the best individuals for their firm. They do this with a variety of different methods. An interview with a recruiter is like a job interview only much more extensive. For example, at some firms you will be put through many rounds of interviews with multiple recruiters, that is if you make it past stage one.

One reason for this is because investment banking is a lucrative career. Firms are paying big bucks, but don't want to waste their money on subpar employees. Therefore the recruiting process must be rigorous and thorough. It is this process that separates the men from the boys, so to speak. Or the girls from the women. Recruiters are going to be basing their evaluations of you on a variety of different criteria. The first thing you'll need to do is show up on time. If you show up too early, you could appear overeager and inexperienced. If you show up late you probably won't even be considered.

Sometimes the first thing a recruiter will ask you is for you to tell them about yourself. You should already be prepared for this. Before the interview, you will need to come up with a brief speech about yourself lasting no longer than 60 seconds. It should summarize your education, your experience and what your short and long term goals are. Always listen carefully to all questions you are asked and pause a moment before answering if you need to. Speak clearly and with confidence, and don't be afraid to ask your recruiter to rephrase a question if you're not sure what it means.

The average investment banking recruiter is going to be looking for someone who shows passion and determination for their career, leadership potential, the right education and the ability to work as part of a team. Investment banking firms are just that, teams that are made up of many players. The employees must fit well and work well together in order for a firm to be successful. Recruiters look for a variety of things when interviewing so do some research and cover all your bases before your interview.
